How to cancel a Duolingo subscription

The question underneath most Duolingo cancellations is not where the button is — it is whether cancelling costs you the streak you have spent months building. It does not. Your streak, your XP, your course progress and every language you have started are all part of free Duolingo and none of it is touched.

What you are paying for is Super Duolingo or Duolingo Max: no ads, unlimited hearts, and on Max the AI features. Those stop. The learning does not.

First, work out who bills you

Duolingo sells the same subscription three ways and each cancels somewhere different. Check your statement:

  • The charge reads APPLE.COM/BILL — Apple bills you. You subscribed in the app on an iPhone or iPad.
  • The charge reads GOOGLE *Duolingo — Google Play bills you.
  • The charge names Duolingo directly — you subscribed on duolingo.com in a browser.

Duolingo support cannot cancel an Apple-billed subscription on your behalf, and Apple cannot cancel a web one. Each store owns what it sold.

Cancelling on an iPhone or iPad

Two routes, both ending in the same place. Through Settings:

  1. Open Settings and tap your name at the top.
  2. Tap Subscriptions.
  3. Tap Duolingo, then Cancel Subscription.

Or from inside the app: tap the Super icon, open Settings in the top-right, choose Manage Plan, then Cancel Subscription — this hands off to the same Apple screen rather than cancelling inside Duolingo, so do not be surprised when it switches apps.

Cancelling on Android or the web

On Android

  1. Open the Play Store and tap your profile picture.
  2. Tap Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions.
  3. Select Duolingo, then Cancel subscription.

On the web

  1. Sign in at duolingo.com in a browser.
  2. Open Settings from your profile menu, then Duolingo Super or Subscription.
  3. Choose Cancel subscription and confirm.

Cancelling a free trial before it charges

Duolingo's trials convert to a full year in one payment rather than a monthly charge, which is why an unnoticed trial tends to be an expensive surprise rather than a small one.

Cancel with the steps above and you keep Super until the trial's original end date — cancelling on day one of a two-week trial still gives you the full two weeks. There is nothing to gain by waiting, and "I'll do it nearer the time" is how almost every converted trial happens.

If the trial arrived through the App Store, it is cancelled in iPhone Settings, not inside Duolingo.

If you're joining or leaving a Family Plan

The Family Plan covers up to six people for less than two individual subscriptions, so it is a common reason to cancel rather than a consequence of cancelling.

The order matters and catches people out: you cannot join a Family Plan while your own subscription is still active. You have to cancel it and then wait for it to actually expire before accepting the invitation. Cancelling does not end it immediately — it runs to the end of the period you have paid for — so there can be a wait of weeks between cancelling and being able to join.

If you are the plan owner, cancelling the Family Plan removes Super from everyone on it, not just you. Individual members who want out leave the plan from their own settings instead, which does not affect the owner's billing.

What you keep, and what actually stops

Everything below stays exactly as it is, because it belongs to free Duolingo:

  • Your streak, including any streak freezes you have already earned.
  • All course progress, XP, crowns, levels and league placement.
  • Every language you have started — none of them are locked behind Super.
  • Your account, friends and leaderboards.

What stops: ads return, hearts become limited again (so mistakes can pause a lesson until they refill), unlimited Legendary attempts end, and on Max the AI features — Explain My Answer, Roleplay and Video Call — switch off.

What happens after you cancel

Super or Max stays active until the end of the period you have already paid for, then the account reverts to free Duolingo. Nothing is refunded for the unused portion as standard.

For an annual charge that went through when you did not expect it, request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com for Apple purchases, through Play Store order history for Google, or Duolingo support for web purchases. All three are far more receptive within a few days of the charge than a month later.

One thing worth doing before the subscription lapses: if you have been relying on unlimited hearts to push through a hard section, the free version will slow that down considerably. Finishing the unit you are mid-way through is easier now than later.

Common questions

Will I lose my streak if I cancel Super Duolingo?

No. Your streak, XP, crowns and all course progress belong to free Duolingo and are completely unaffected. You keep any streak freezes you have already earned. Only the paid features stop.

Can I still use Duolingo after cancelling?

Yes, fully. Every language and every lesson is free. What changes is that ads return, hearts become limited again so mistakes can pause a lesson, and the Max AI features switch off.

How do I cancel Duolingo if I subscribed on my iPhone?

Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Duolingo → Cancel Subscription. Duolingo itself cannot cancel it because Apple took the payment, and the in-app Manage Plan link simply sends you to this same Apple screen.

Do I need to cancel before joining a Family Plan?

Yes, and you also have to wait for it to expire. An active subscription blocks you from joining, and cancelling does not end it immediately — it runs to the end of the period you have paid for, which can mean waiting weeks before you can accept the invitation.

Can I get a refund on an annual Duolingo subscription?

Sometimes. For Apple purchases request it at reportaproblem.apple.com; Apple decides case by case and is much more receptive within a few days of the charge. Duolingo does not routinely refund unused time on a subscription you chose to cancel.
