How to cancel an iCloud storage subscription
If you have been looking for iCloud under Settings → your name → Subscriptions and cannot find it, nothing is wrong with your phone. iCloud+ is not listed there. It is the one recurring Apple charge that lives somewhere else entirely, which is why this particular search exists at all.
There is also a real risk attached to this one that most subscriptions do not carry: cancelling drops you to 5 GB, and anything above that stops syncing and can eventually be deleted. Clear the space first.
Do this before you cancel
Downgrading to the free tier gives you 5 GB. If you are currently using 40 GB, those extra 35 GB do not quietly stay put — backups stop running, photos stop uploading, and Apple eventually removes what no longer fits.
Check what you are actually using first, under Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Account Storage. Then deal with the biggest items:
- Photos — usually the largest by far. Download the full library to a computer, or move it to Google Photos or another service, before you downgrade.
- Device backups — often several gigabytes each, including backups for phones you no longer own. Deleting old ones is free and frequently solves the storage problem on its own.
- iCloud Drive — copy anything you need to your Mac or a USB drive.
- Messages and attachments — years of photos and videos sent in Messages, which most people never think to count.
If deleting old device backups gets you under 5 GB, you may not need a paid plan at all. That single step is worth trying before anything else.
Cancelling on an iPhone or iPad
There is no "cancel" button. Apple treats this as downgrading to the free 5 GB tier, and the wording on screen reflects that.
- Open Settings and tap your name at the top.
- Tap iCloud, then Manage Account Storage (older versions say Manage Storage).
- Tap Change Storage Plan.
- Tap Downgrade Options and enter your Apple Account password when prompted.
- Choose Free 5 GB to cancel outright, or a cheaper paid tier to reduce the bill.
- Tap Done.
The password prompt at step 4 is not optional and catches people out — the Downgrade Options screen looks empty or unresponsive until it is entered.
Cancelling from a Mac, PC or the web
On a Mac
- Open System Settings and click your name at the top.
- Click iCloud, then Manage beside the storage bar.
- Click Change Storage Plan → Downgrade Options.
- Sign in, pick the free 5 GB tier, and confirm.
On a Windows PC
- Open iCloud for Windows and sign in.
- Click Storage, then Change Storage Plan.
- Choose Downgrade Options and confirm.
Without any of your devices to hand
Sign in at icloud.com, open your account settings from the profile icon, and look for the storage section. If the downgrade option is not offered there, Apple Support can make the change on your behalf once you have verified the account — this is the standard route for a lost or sold device that is still being billed.
If your storage is part of Apple One
Apple One bundles iCloud+ with Music, TV+ and Arcade. When you are on one, the iCloud downgrade options are restricted, because the storage is not a separate purchase.
Cancel or downgrade the bundle instead, under Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Apple One. Be aware that ending Apple One removes the storage along with everything else in it, so the same clearing-out advice applies — and more urgently, because you may drop a long way in one step.
What happens after you downgrade
The change takes effect at the end of the billing period you have already paid for, not immediately, so there is a window to finish moving things.
After that, if you are over 5 GB: new photos and videos stop uploading, device backups stop running, and iCloud Drive becomes read-only. Existing data is not deleted the moment you go over — Apple sends warnings first — but it is eventually removed, and a device that has not backed up in months is a genuine risk if it is lost or broken.
Features that came with iCloud+ also end: Private Relay, Hide My Email and the custom email domain. Any addresses you created with Hide My Email stop forwarding, so update anything important that was signed up with one.
Common questions
Why is iCloud not showing in my Subscriptions list?
Because Apple does not manage it there. iCloud+ is handled as a storage plan under Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → Change Storage Plan → Downgrade Options, not in the Subscriptions screen where every other Apple subscription appears.
Will I lose my photos if I cancel iCloud storage?
Not immediately, but yes eventually if you stay over the free 5 GB. Uploads and backups stop straight away and Apple sends warnings before removing anything. Download or move your photo library before the downgrade takes effect at the end of the billing period.
How do I cancel iCloud storage without an iPhone?
Sign in at icloud.com and look for the storage settings under your profile, or use a Mac or iCloud for Windows. If the option is not available, contact Apple Support — they can downgrade the plan once you verify the account, which is the usual route after a phone has been lost or sold.
Can I get a refund for iCloud storage I didn't use?
Usually not automatically, since the downgrade takes effect at the end of the paid period rather than immediately. For a charge you believe was wrong, request it at reportaproblem.apple.com within a few days.
Is iCloud+ the same as an Apple One subscription?
No, but Apple One includes iCloud+ storage. If you are on Apple One, iCloud has no separate charge and the downgrade options are limited — you change or cancel the bundle instead, under Settings → your name → Subscriptions.
