How to cancel an Apple Music subscription

Cancelling Apple Music takes about twenty seconds. The part worth slowing down for is what goes with it: every song, album and playlist you added from the Apple Music catalogue disappears when the subscription ends. Those tracks were never yours — they were licensed for as long as you paid.

Music you actually bought from iTunes, and anything you uploaded yourself, is unaffected. Below is where the cancel button is on each device, and how to keep a record of the playlists first.

Cancelling on an iPhone or iPad

There are two routes and they end in the same place. Through Settings:

  1. Open Settings and tap your name at the top.
  2. Tap Subscriptions.
  3. Tap Apple Music, then Cancel Subscription.

Or from inside the Music app: tap the account icon in the top-right, then Manage Subscription → Cancel Subscription. If Apple Music is not listed at all, check whether it is part of an Apple One bundle — see below.

Cancelling on other devices

On a Mac

  1. Open the Music app.
  2. In the menu bar choose Account → Account Settings and sign in.
  3. Beside Subscriptions, click Manage → Edit → Cancel Subscription.

On Android

  1. Open the Apple Music app and tap the three dots in the top-right.
  2. Tap Account, then Manage Subscription.
  3. Choose Cancel Subscription.

On Windows or the web

  1. Go to music.apple.com and sign in.
  2. Click your name in the bottom-left, then Settings.
  3. Scroll to Subscriptions and click Manage.

Cancelling a free trial before it charges

Apple Music trials arrive from several directions: a new iPhone or pair of AirPods, a carrier plan, or the standard offer inside the app. They all convert to a paid subscription automatically.

Cancel using the steps above and you keep the music until the trial's original end date. Cancelling on the first day of a three-month trial still gives you three months, so there is nothing to gain by waiting — and a trial you plan to cancel "nearer the time" is the single most commonly forgotten subscription there is.

If Apple Music is part of Apple One

Apple One bundles Music with TV+, iCloud+ and Arcade. On a bundle, Apple Music has no separate line and cannot be cancelled by itself.

Open Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Apple One and either pick a smaller tier or cancel the bundle. Check what else is in it first — it usually carries your iCloud+ storage, and losing that without preparing can put photos and backups at risk. The iCloud guide covers what to clear beforehand.

Save your playlists before the subscription ends

Playlists built from catalogue music empty out when the subscription lapses. The playlist may survive as a name with nothing in it, which is worse than useless if you want to rebuild later.

Do this while the subscription is still active:

  • Write down or screenshot the track lists for anything you care about. Tedious, but reliable.
  • Use a transfer service such as Soundiiz or TuneMyMusic to copy playlists to Spotify or YouTube Music. Both need the subscription live to read the library.
  • Check for purchased music — anything bought from iTunes stays in your library permanently and can be re-downloaded. Filter by Downloaded to see what is genuinely yours.
  • Back up an uploaded library. If you matched a personal collection with iTunes Match, keep the original files somewhere safe; the cloud copies stop being accessible.

If you resubscribe within about 30 days, Apple usually still has your library and playlists intact. Beyond that, assume they are gone.

What happens after you cancel

The subscription runs to the end of the period you have already paid for. Nothing is refunded for the unused portion by default.

After that date, catalogue tracks and downloads vanish, Apple Music radio stations beyond Apple Music 1 stop, and the app reverts to playing only music you own. Your Apple Account, iCloud and everything else are untouched — cancelling Apple Music does not affect any other Apple service.

For a renewal that charged when you did not expect it, request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com. Apple decides case by case and is more receptive within a few days of the charge.

Common questions

Will I lose my music if I cancel Apple Music?

You lose everything added from the Apple Music catalogue, including downloads and the contents of playlists built from it. Music you bought from iTunes, and files you uploaded yourself, stay in your library permanently.

Do my playlists come back if I resubscribe?

Usually yes if you resubscribe within around 30 days, as Apple keeps the library for a short grace period. After longer gaps, assume the playlists are gone and export them before cancelling.

How do I cancel Apple Music if I don't have an iPhone?

Use music.apple.com in a browser and open Settings from your name in the bottom-left, or the Apple Music app on Android via the three-dot menu → Account → Manage Subscription. Both work without any Apple hardware.

Why can't I find Apple Music in my Subscriptions?

Either it is inside an Apple One bundle, where it has no individual entry, or you are signed in with a different Apple Account than the one that bought it. Check which account is listed at the top of Settings.

Does cancelling Apple Music cancel iCloud too?

No, they are separate. The exception is Apple One — cancelling that bundle ends the iCloud+ storage as well, which is worth preparing for before you do it.
