How to cancel an Audible membership
Two things about Audible catch almost everyone out. The first is that you cannot cancel from inside the Audible app on any device — there is no button, which is why so many people assume the membership is locked. The second is more expensive: cancelling normally destroys any credits you have not spent.
There is an exception to that second rule, and it depends entirely on who bills you. Work that out first, because it changes both where you cancel and what you lose.
First, work out who bills you
Audible sells the same membership through three channels, and each one cancels in a different place. Check your bank statement or the original receipt:
- The charge reads
AudibleorAmazon Digital— Audible bills you directly. This is the most common case. - The charge reads
APPLE.COM/BILL— Apple bills you. You subscribed inside the app on an iPhone or iPad. - The charge reads
GOOGLE *Audible— Google Play bills you.
This distinction is not cosmetic. Audible cannot cancel an Apple-billed membership on your behalf, and Apple cannot cancel an Audible-billed one. Support at either end will simply send you to the other.
Before you cancel: what happens to your credits
This is the part worth reading before you click anything, because the rule is not the same for everyone.
If Audible bills you directly, unused credits are forfeited the moment the membership ends. They do not carry over and support will not generally reinstate them. Spend them first — a credit buys any title regardless of its cash price, so the sensible move is to spend them on the most expensive books on your wish list.
If Apple or Google bills you, credits issued through that store do not expire and stay in your account after cancellation. It is a genuine quirk of how store-billed memberships are handled, and it means there is no rush to spend them.
Either way, any audiobook you have already bought is yours permanently — with a credit or with cash. It stays in your library and plays in the app forever. What you lose is access to the Plus Catalogue, the all-you-can-listen library that only works while a membership is active.
Consider pausing instead
If the problem is cost rather than the service itself, Audible lets you pause rather than cancel. A pause keeps your credits alive and stops the billing.
- Sign in at audible.com in a desktop browser.
- Open Account Details → Manage Membership.
- Choose Pause Membership and pick a length.
You can pause once every 12 months, for up to 90 days. It is offered on directly-billed memberships; if Apple bills you, pausing is not available and cancelling is the only route.
Cancelling when Audible bills you directly
This has to be done in a browser. The Audible app has no cancellation option, and the mobile site tends to hide account settings, so use a desktop browser if you can.
- Sign in at audible.com.
- Hover your name in the top-right and open Account Details.
- Choose Cancel membership.
- Work through the retention offers — Audible will offer a discount, a pause or extra credits before it lets you finish.
- Keep clicking through until you see a confirmation that the membership has ended.
The cancellation is not complete until that final confirmation screen. Closing the tab partway through leaves the membership active, which is the most common reason people find they have been charged again the following month.
Cancelling when Apple bills you
If you signed up inside the app on an iPhone or iPad, the payment belongs to your Apple Account and only Apple can stop it.
- Open Settings and tap your name at the top.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Tap Audible, then Cancel Subscription.
Audible's own help pages acknowledge this route and will not cancel it for you. If Audible is not listed on that screen, you are probably signed in with a different Apple Account than the one that bought it — the Apple subscriptions guide covers how to find the right one.
Cancelling when Google Play bills you
- Open the Play Store and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions.
- Select Audible, then Cancel subscription.
What happens after you cancel
The membership stays active until the end of the period you have already paid for — you do not lose access immediately, and nothing is refunded for the unused portion as a matter of course.
After that date your library still opens and every book you own still plays. The Plus Catalogue titles disappear, the monthly credit stops, and the member discount on cash purchases ends.
If you were charged for a renewal you did not intend, request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com for Apple purchases, or through Audible customer service for direct memberships. Both are more receptive within a few days of the charge.
Common questions
Can I cancel Audible from the app?
No. There is no cancellation option inside the Audible app on any platform, which is deliberate rather than a bug. Cancel at audible.com in a browser if Audible bills you, or in Settings → your name → Subscriptions if you subscribed on an iPhone.
Do I lose my audiobooks if I cancel Audible?
No. Books bought with a credit or with cash stay in your library permanently and keep playing after the membership ends. You only lose the Plus Catalogue, which is the rotating all-you-can-listen collection included with a membership.
What happens to my unused Audible credits?
If Audible bills you directly, unused credits are forfeited when the membership ends, so spend them first. If Apple or Google Play bills you, credits issued through that store do not expire and remain in your account after you cancel.
Can I pause Audible instead of cancelling?
Yes, on directly-billed memberships. Account Details → Manage Membership → Pause Membership, once every 12 months for up to 90 days. Your credits survive a pause. Apple-billed memberships cannot be paused.
I cancelled Audible and I'm still being charged. Why?
Almost always one of two things: the cancellation was abandoned partway through Audible's retention offers and never confirmed, or you cancelled in the wrong place — cancelling at audible.com does nothing to an Apple-billed membership. Check your statement for APPLE.COM/BILL and cancel in iPhone Settings if it appears.
